In Preservation, 1998-2008

  • What makes it go!

  • First move after restoration

Photo p113. 19th March 1998 was a big day for members of the Battle Of Britain Locomotive Society when 34081 moved under its own steam for the first time in preservation, some 21 years and four months after she escaped the confines of Barry scrap yard. With the air smoothed cladding still to be fitted she is seen in Wansford yard. Quite an emotional moment for those who'd stuck at the task for all those years and had sadly lost a few good friends along the way.
    Photograph by Ian Bowskill.
  • Casing fitted

Photo p114. By the 22nd of March 1998 the casing had been fitted but not painted. As part of her running in turns 34081 provided banking assistance to trains leaving Wansford.
    Photograph by Ian Bowskill.
  • Fully painted

Photo p115. May 19th 1998 saw 34081 emerge from the Wansford paint shop resplendent in a brand new coat of malachite green. Nameplates and crests wouldn't be fitted for another four months.

  • Loaded test run

hoto p116. With the day's scheduled activity over, 34081 finally got to do her loaded test run. Seen here making good prgress past Sutton Cross on her way to Peterborough on 19th May 1998.

Photo p117. Still shining like a new pin, 34081 is turned at Wansford at the end of a successful day, 19th May 1998.

  • First revenue train

Photo p118. 23rd May 1998 saw 34081 haul a revenue earning passenger train for the first time since August 1964, a gap of nearly 34 years. She is seen passing under the A1 soon after departing Wansford for Yarwell.

  • On Van traffic

Photo p5. On Van traffic at Wansford on 21st June 1998. The vans are all Banana vans and this train was replicating the Southampton Banana trains.

  • Renaming Ceremony

Photo p122. Pete Waterman performed the unveiling ceremony on 12th September 1998 and is seen here giving his speech and unveiling the nameplate and crest. Whilst we own the original nameplates, crests and smokebox numberplate 34081 carries replicas as the originals are far too valuable to risk having them stolen.

  • Renaming Ceremony

Photo p123. On 12th September 1998 when 34081 was renamed and rededicated 92 Squadron we had the great honour of a number of 92 Squadron veterans attending the ceremony. Sadly though, not all of these wonderful people are with us today.

  • NVR "Mail by Rail" weekend

Photo p70. 34081 at the NVR's "Mail by Rail" weekend, 15th/16th June 2002. On Sunday 16th 34081 was requested to do a 'Thunderbird' job which entailed running out to between Sutton and Castor to rescue the Deltic and a rake of Mk1s. The usual procedure of a pilotman with the returned staff accompanying the engine and authorisation to pass the starter and advanced starter at danger, into the occupied section, was given. It was reported that the Deltic had failed, but when 34081 arrived it had an engine running, so it's not certain what the fault was, but the Deltic and its train were towed into Wansford platform 2.
